The new feature, along with additional eco-focused updates, will be introduced at the 2025 race weekend BOULDER, Colo. — Boulderthon, presented by PUMA, has announced new sustainability efforts ahead of its 2025 event taking place Sept. 28. This year’s new additions will include providing hemp bibs to all 10K participants, as well as partnering with Hiccup and the City of Boulder to use 100% reusable silicone cups for water and hydration across all race courses. The City of Boulder helped make these efforts possible, with a $5,000 stipend to go towards the use of Hiccup silicone cups. “The City of Boulder has a long-standing dedication to environmental sustainability,” said Justin Greenstein, Manager of the City of Boulder’s Office of Special Events. “We are proud to support Boulderthon on their sustainability efforts, and hope that we can help inspire others in our community, as well as nationally, to continue to implement a culture of shared environmental stewardship.” Along with these new features, Boulderthon has brought on Tina Muir as its sustainability advisor. Muir has already been an instrumental part of bringing Boulderthon’s recent sustainability efforts to life, and will continue to grow the event’s sustainability elements. Muir is a climate advocate, former elite marathoner and founder of Racing for Sustainability, a nonprofit that provides practical, affordable tools and guidance to help organizers reduce their environmental impact. Through her leadership, Muir works with major races across the country, brands and communities to implement sustainable practices that reduce impact and promote equity in sport. “Boulderthon is a leader in the industry for being innovative and creative in finding new ways to bring the industry forward,” said Tina Muir, sustainability advisor of Boulderthon, presented by PUMA. “We have some exciting times ahead, exploring how sustainability can be a priority and work alongside performance. We want to get runners excited about what is possible in this sport they love so much.” The 2025 Boulderthon has also welcomed Charlotte’s Web, a Colorado-based company, as the world’s leading brand by market share in the production and distribution of innovative hemp-based cannabidiol (CBD). The partnership highlights Charlotte’s Web’s continued contributions to the local community as they assist in Boulderthon’s sustainability mission. “It’s important to us at Boulderthon that our event truly represents the Boulder culture, which includes the incredible sustainability efforts we see throughout our whole city,” said Alexa Squillaro, event director of Boulderthon, presented by PUMA. “Through these partnerships and new race features, we are taking great strides to make our event even more eco-friendly, and hope to inspire other events nationwide to follow suit.” Boulderthon, presented by Puma, offers five distances for participants to take part in, the marathon, half marathon, 10K, 5K and Kids Run. The 2025 Boulderthon will debut new marathon and half marathon routes, with the marathon net elevation gain being cut by about 40%, going from 982 feet to 603 feet, and the half marathon elevation gain being cut by almost 50%, going from 384 feet to 203 feet. Boulderthon’s half marathon course will take participants through different landscapes, with stunning views of the Flatirons along the way. The marathon will expand from the half marathon course, taking participants on North 51st Street past the Boulder Reservoir and along Boulder County backroads frequently used by training Olympians, before looping to return for the famous Pearl Street Mall finish. The 10K course will run participants through the streets of Boulder showcasing the scenic town, before leading them to Downtown Boulder to join in on the Pearl Street Mall finish. The second annual Heart to Heart 5K by BCH features an all-road, fast and flat experience for all participants, allowing wheelchair athletes and those utilizing wheeled vehicles, like duo runners, to take part in the event. Registration for the 2025 event is currently open. The top-rated, fast-growing multi-distance event became the second-largest race in Colorado in its first year of existence, and the largest fall running event in the state. In its fourth annual edition, Boulderthon drew nearly 10,000 runners from all 50 states as well as 22 countries. This secured its entry into the list of the top 100 largest running events in the country, as reported by RunSignUp. In 2023, Active.com named Boulderthon one of the Top 5 Best Half Marathons in the United States, and the following year, the 5K and half marathon courses were both named a top 10 in their categories by USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice awards.
