WHAT:
New York Road Runners (NYRR)—the nonprofit that “runs” New York City producing 60 annual adult and youth races including the TCS New York City Marathon—and Front Runners New York—the world’s largest LGBTQ+ running club—will host an expected 7,500 runners at the sold-out 44th Front Runners New York LGBT Pride Run® 4M in Central Park Saturday, June 28.
As part of its vision to build healthier lives and stronger communities through the transformative power of running, New York Road Runners has collaborated with Front Runners New York since the first edition of the event in 1982 to champion the LGBTQIA+ community. The landmark race marked the start of a long-standing collaboration between New York Road Runners, Front Runners New York, and the City of New York.
A New York City Pride weekend marquee event, the four-mile race celebrates LGBTQIA+ pride and the ongoing movement toward equality, diversity, and inclusiveness. The 2019 event set the Guinness World Record for largest pride charity run with more than 10,200 finishers! This year’s race theme, “The Power of Our Community,” highlights the importance of running together in solidarity with those still fighting to be seen, heard, and protected.
New York Road Runners’ Inclusivity Initiatives
New York Road Runners has been a leader in celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community for more than 40 years, and its efforts have been recognized by The Stonewall Inn’s Safe Space Initiative, declaring the TCS New York City Marathon as the first sporting event to be named a Safe Space. New York Road Runners was the first organization to launch a nonbinary gender identification and category for its races and events, along with prize money for the division.
About Front Runners New York
Front Runners New York is New York City’s premier LGBTQ+ running and multisport club. Founded in 1979, the club has grown to over 1,100 members, representing one of the largest LGBTQ+ athletic clubs in the world. Each year, Front Runners New York makes a donation to an LGBTQ+-related nonprofit organization. This year’s race beneficiary, Lambda Legal, is the nation’s oldest and largest legal organization working to secure full civil rights for LGBTQ+ people and those living with HIV. A portion of race proceeds will support Lambda Legal’s life-saving litigation and advocacy.
