Thousands participate along California’s iconic coastline, creating impact at the only running event within the City of Malibu

MALIBU, Calif. – Malibu Moves, the only running event featuring a course within the City of Malibu, celebrated new milestones and the accomplishments of 2,500 participants during its third annual event on Oct. 24 and 25. The event’s upward trajectory continued, with registrations up nearly 20% year over year and more than 90% since its inaugural race in 2023. During the race-day festivities, organizers announced they have now donated more than $150,000 to youth-focused charities and fire relief causes in Malibu.

“Our event has a motto: ‘Purpose Over Pace.’ Our authentically Malibu event brings the community together while also giving back to causes that make our city a better place for locals and visitors alike,” said Erica Segel, founder and race director of Malibu Moves. “Reaching the $150,000 threshold has only further motivated us to grow our festivals so that we can continue to grow our giving and impact.”

The weekend’s festivities began with the opening of the Expo and Packet Pick-up on Saturday morning. That afternoon, running events kicked off with the 1K Kids Run and the one-mile Zuma Dash. Sunday featured the main events: a half marathon, 10K and 5K, all followed by the Finish Line Festival that included a charity beer garden.

Local run clubs and organizations showed up and showed out during the event. Members of Malibu’s volunteer community fire brigade, including Baywatch star David Chokachi, carried 40lb packs in the 5K to symbolize the resilience of the community amid fire impacts. Teams like Pepperdine RISE and the LA Leggers had a large number of members representing out on the course. The LA Road Runners led the pacing team for the event, helping participants reach their unique race day goals.

Malibu Moves lived up to its legacy of creating a welcoming atmosphere along its exclusive Malibu race course, with course time limits that are inclusive of more paces than traditional road running events. The event also featured special multi-race challenges with additional medals and swag: the Coastal Quest Challenge, the California Double and the Zuma Legacy Club.

While the race works to create an inclusive environment, elite competitors were part of the field of athletes who took to the Malibu course. Top results for the day included:

  • Will Gravelle, first place in the men’s division of the half marathon
  • Mckaylie Caesar, first place in the women’s division of the half marathon
