Run Writer Jim Ferstle Passes Away

Phil Stewart

The running world lost a quiet stalwart, Road Race Management lost a long time writer and I lost a good friend when Jim Ferstle died last Friday morning. Jim was unassuming but dogged. He was all about getting to the bottom of a story and not getting distracted by hype and rumors. These traits were most evident as he tracked the use of performance enhancing drugs in the sport over many years. There was probably no one in the country who knew more about what was really going on than Jim. But he was always led by facts, not fantasy. Jim was a fixture on the Twin Cities running scene with his blog “Down the Backstretch” which chronicled local running news. Jim loved to run, swim, cross country ski and walk his beagles. I will miss my phone calls with him when he shared with me many of the facts as he discovered them. In a world in which communications seem to move faster and faster often at the expense of the truth, Jim was old school, cautious, but nearly always correct. He will be missed.
