ROCK ‘N’ ROLL VIRTUAL RACING RETURNS WITH OVER 11,000 PARTICIPANTS FROM 90 NATIONS REGISTERED TO TAKE ON 15K, 8K OR REMIX CHALLENGE

 

- Over 9,000 participants registered to complete The Original challenge, honoring the first Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series event in San Diego, by running 19.98 miles during the month of July

- Rock 'n' Roll VR12 returns July 17-19 offering a 12K, 5K, and Remix Challenge
TAMPA, Fla. (July 13, 2020) More than 11,000 people from 90 nations and 48 states have returned to the virtual start line to take part in the 11th edition of the Rock ‘n’ Roll® Virtual Running™ (VR™) Series. Rock ‘n’ Roll VR11 gave participants the opportunity to challenge themselves with two different race distances that included a 15K and 8K, as well as the Remix Challenge for participants who wanted to take on both distances. Participants were able to compete anywhere, indoors or outdoors, as long as the distance of their choosing was completed in one session between Friday, July 10 at 5 a.m. ET and event close Sunday, July 12 at 11:59 p.m. ET.

Rock ‘n’ Rollers also jumped at the opportunity to take on the new Rock ‘n’ Roll Virtual Running Club Challenge, The Original named in honor to the very first Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series event, the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon and ½ Marathon held in 1998. Over 9,00 participants are currently registered to compete in the challenge that requires running or walking 19.98 miles during the month of July. Participants who complete will earn 321 points and become eligible to win a free Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series registration to future physical event.

Featured Rock ‘n’ Rollers Share “Why I VR”

Jonathan Cobb
Jonathan Cobb is a 34-year-old cook who lives in Dumfries, Virginia. Jonathan had been obese his entire life and never participated in any sort of running events, until he underwent bariatric surgery for weight loss last December. He then took on a new challenge in life and started running during his free time to keep himself in shape and motivated. After the Rock ‘n’ Roll Washington D.C. 5K was cancelled, he started running in the weekly Rock ‘n’ Roll Virtual Running Series races. To date he has already completed 15 Rock ‘n’ Roll VR races and two Remix Challenges.

Yvonne Zdanowski
Yvonne, a German citizen who relocated to the U.S. just three years ago, is an energetic mother of a four-year-old girl and 17-month-old boy who has taken her new virtual hobby and the Rock ’n’ Roll Virtual Running Club to a new level. Yvonne is currently temporarily stationed in Biloxi, Mississippi at the Keesler Air Force base with her husband, who serves in the United States Air Force. She and her family plan on returning to Germany this coming fall, but in the meantime, she has been busy becoming a better runner with Stroller Warriors Keesler, a running club for military spouses that she helps organize. After participating in the 2020 Rock ’n’ Roll New Orleans Half Marathon in February, Yvonne wanted to remain active amidst the pandemic. She signed up for the Virtual Club and after participating in Rock ‘n’ Roll VR3, from there she was hooked.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Recap – Rock ‘n’ Roll VR11
Participants for Rock ‘n’ Roll VR11 came from around the world and ranged in age from 19 to 82. The United States led the way with over 8,000 walkers and runners followed by the United Kingdom (nearly 600), Canada (over 500), Mexico (over 450) and Portugal (over 200). Other nations represented included Netherlands, Colombia, Peru, Hong Kong, Norway, Austria, Paraguay, and Barbados, among others. Of the 48 U.S. states represented this past weekend, the greatest number came from California, followed by Texas, Virginia, Florida, and Arizona.

To date, over 48,000 people from across the globe have joined the Rock ‘n’ Roll Virtual Running Club platform, giving them access to the series of weekly races, challenges, and rewards.

More than 6,000 participants took on a Rock ‘n’ Roll Virtual Running Club™ Challenge leading up to Rock ‘n’ Roll VR11. Several separate running and workout-based challenges were offered with the opportunity for special prizes such as a Rock ‘n’ Roll by Brooks Running Company Accessories Bundle, a Rock ‘n’ Roll Tie Dye Hoodie Trio, or a Rock ‘n’ Roll Hydration Backpack. The challenges included the Coach Paul’s Mile Repeats Challenge, St. Jude: Mission Miles, and Coach Carrie's Progression Training Series.

Looking Forward –Rock ‘n’ Roll VR12
This weekend, Rock ‘n’ Roll VR12 will offer two distances for the global community, including a 12K and 8K, as well as the popular Remix Challenge for participants that want to take on both distances. Race weekend starts on Friday, July 17 at 5 a.m. ET and closes on Sunday, July 19 at 11:59 p.m. ET. 

To register for Rock ‘n’ Roll VR12, runners need to sign up through the Rock ‘n’ Roll Virtual Running Club platform and connect to their tracker app. Runners can then complete their registration by going to the “Events” tab and clicking “Register Now” on the virtual race page. Challenges for this week are available to participate in now and include:
  • The Original – Run 19.98 miles during the month of July to honor the original Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon and ½ Marathon held in 1998. Participants can complete this challenge in multiple sessions.
  • United Airlines: The Embarcadero! – Visualize a run along the San Francisco Waterfront and take in the views from Oracle Park to Fisherman’s Wharf while tracking and completing a 3.4-mile run or walk in one session
  • Community Challenge: Lanette’s 3 Mile HIIT – Track and complete three miles of running in one session. Fuel your training with this high-intensity, tempo workout
  • Coach Carrie's Progression Training Series – Track and complete 155 minutes of running in three sessions with tips from Coach Carrie on how to best tackle the three sessions
