Brendan Sage (St. Michael, Minn.) and Tara Kaur (Sedona, Ariz.) takes top spots in the marathon; 
Panuel Mkungo (Kenya) and Kellyn Taylor (Flagstaff, Ariz.) win the half marathon

PHOENIX, SCOTTSDALE, TEMPE, Ariz. (Jan. 19, 2020) – Over 16,000 registered runners took to the streets this weekend to participate in the 17th running of the 2020 Humana Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon & ½ Marathon. Known for Bringing the Fun to the Run™ the event saw runners of all athletic levels enjoyed the sights and sounds of three scenic Arizona cities.

Kicking off the New Year, the 2020 Humana Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon & ½ Marathon offered a distance for everyone. The best-in-class running event began Saturday with the KiDS ROCK and 5K presented by Brooks races. The running returned on Sunday with the marathon and half marathon. Runners from all 50 states and 20 countries received a first-class tour of the area as they ran through the streets of Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe for a one-of-a-kind urban Southwestern running experience with a beautiful backdrop and weather.

In the marathon, Brendan Sage (St. Michael, Minn.) won the race with his first-place effort clocking a time of 2:20:58. Chip  O'Hara (Auburn, N.Y.) was second with a time of 2:21:20. Craig Curley (Tucson, Ariz.) followed in third place finishing in 2:25:11. Tara Kaur (Sedona, Ariz.) was the women’s champion with a final time of 2:42:16 with Andrea Pomaranski (Wolverine Lake, Mich.) next behind her at 2:44:09. Sarah Klass (Oakland, Cali.) rounded out the podium in 2:46:22.

In the half marathon Panuel Mkungo (Kenya) won the race with his first-place effort clocking a time of 1:00:25. Daniel Kemoi (Kenya) was second with a time of 1:01:01. Brian Shrader (Brighton, Mass.) followed in third place finishing in 1:01:08. Kellyn Taylor (Flagstaff, Ariz.) was the women’s champion with a final time of 1:09:13 followed immediately by Stephanie Bruce Flagstaff, Ariz.) just behind her with an identical time of 1:09:13. Bridget Belyeu (Newnan, Ga.) rounded out the podium in 1:12:27.

Several local bands, including the Cesar Chavez High School Drumline, Breakdown, Crown The Yeti, JT's Steel Drum Band, The Phoenician Four, Ripcord, Steelin’ The Night Away plus many others performed live on band stages along the route interspersed with cheerleaders and themed water stations. Participants moved along to more music than ever with all new mile-markers that included speakers while taking in the local scenery and city streets packed with spectator support.

The musically themed road race celebrated the day’s accomplishments with Tempe’s own GRAMMY award-nominated Gin Blossoms headlining the post-race concert at the finish line festival held at Tempe Beach Park. The event was free and open to the public.
