National Black Marathoners Association (NBMA) – Press Release
The NBMA has been on the forefront of fighting discrimination and racism in distance running for over fifteen years, while recognizing the accomplishments of African-Americans. Our race number logo is based on Juneteenth. 1865 is year that the Thirteenth Amendment, which ended slavery, was ratified by Congress. Afterwards, we were “free to run.â€
On this Juneteenth 2020, we're pleased to announce a historic partnership with the Boston Athletic Association (Boston Marathon), Chicago Marathon, New York Road Runners (NYC Marathon), and Los Angeles Marathon. Thanks to working with Running USA, each of these races will be allocating five charity entries to the NBMA for their 2021 races. With the proceeds from these fundraising activities, we will be able to expand our educational and training programs, as well as increase college scholarships.
Tony Reed, Executive Director of the National Black Marathoners Association (NBMA), frequently talks about the importance of "having a seat at the table." From 2015 through 2019, he was on the board of directors for Running USA. He says "If you're serious about making a difference in the distance running community, then begin by getting on the board of directors of your local races. He is also on the board of directors for the Dallas Marathon.
