(13-Mar) -- Just hours after organizers of the Boston Marathon announced that the event would be postponed until September 14 due to the coronavirus pandemic, organizers of the Virgin Money London Marathon also announced that their event --originally scheduled for Sunday, April 26-- had been postponed until the fall. The new date is Sunday, October 4.
"The world is in an unprecedented situation grappling with a global pandemic of COVID-19 and public health is everyone's priority," said London Marathon event director Hugh Brasher through a statement. "We know how disappointing this news will be for so many: the runners who have trained for many months, the thousands of charities for which they are raising funds and the millions who watch the race every year."
Founded in 1981, the Virgin Money London Marathon has never been cancelled or postponed and has been held 39 consecutive times.
With the two postponements today, the fall marathon schedule for the Abbott World Marathon Majors will be as follows:
September 14, Boston Marathon
September 27, BMW Berlin Marathon
October 4, Virgin Monday London Marathon
October 11, Bank of America Chicago Marathon
November 1, TCS New York City Marathon
