SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.
(April 8, 2018) – Approximately 7,000 registered runners from age 12 to 78 took to the streets of San Francisco on Saturday to participate in the 6th running of the United Airlines Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon San Francisco. With a renewed focus on the core pillars of bringing fun to the run with great music in a community environment, runners of all athletic levels enjoyed taking in the sights of the Bay Area including crossing the iconic Golden Gate Bridge.
The best-in-class running event kicked off on Sunday when runners from 48 states and 48 countries took off in the half marathon at the new start line next to Pier 39. The brand-new course took runners through the streets and neighborhoods of the city before a picturesque run over the Golden Gate Bridge and crossing the finish line next to Ghirardelli Square concluding their race in the heart of Fisherman’s Warf.
26-year-old, Matt Lenehan (San Diego, CA) broke the tape as the overall champion in a time of 1:10:48. Taylor Gilland (San Francisco) finished in second with a time of 1:12:10 as Olle Dahlberg (Göteborg, Sweden) rounded out the podium in third finishing in 1:12:28. 34-year-old Clara Peterson (Corte Madera, CA) was the women’s half marathon champion with a final time of 1:18:52. Andrea Thyen (Menlo Park, CA) took the second-place spot in 1:21:18 and Lexy Gilmour (Helensburgh, Australia) finished third in 1:22:25.
Elite runners and fast times aside, Sunday’s event was all about the race experience. Some of the best live bands from around the Bay Area, including Pistachio, The Alegre Sisters, and Alvie & the Breakfast Pigs performed on improved band stages along the route, interspersed with cheerleaders and themed water stations. Participants moved along to more music than ever with all new mile-markers that included speakers and race pacers who ran with mobile speaker packs.
The musically themed road race concluded with the sounds of local favorite Tainted Love, who brought the best of the 80s to the stage as the headliner for the Toyota Rock ‘n’ Roll Concert Series, bringing runners and their families to their feet in celebration of the day’s accomplishments.
